State of Rio

Petropolis, State of Rio Ilha Grande, State of Rio Niteroi Museum of Contemporary Art, State of Rio

The small State of Rio de Janeiro (approximately 50.000 square km (19,305 sq mi) is more than just the Cidade Maravilhosa (the wonderful city) although it is the main attraction. In the areas around the agglomeration and its 7 million inhabitants, the beaches, the mountains and the forests are only a few hours away. The sites to really visit include: the "lakes area" in the West, with seaside resorts: Saquamera, Cabo Frio and of course the legendary Buzios "invented" by the french stars (and firstly Brigitte Bardot) in the 60s. In the north side of the city the atmosphere changes dramatically: it only takes one hour to get to the base of the Serra dos Orgaos (the organs mountains) from the city exit. A cultural program including a visit to the imperial cities (Petrópolis & Teresópolis) or a sport program with great trek between and around the unbelievable peaks of the range. And last but not least, the West side with the Costa Verde and its paradise beaches and islands. There again the contrast is striking with many activities available which is why we gave this area its own category.
